Fourteen

Every Monday night, Harvest Fellowship’s deacons gathered in the pastor’s conference room, twenty men selected by the congregation who best represented Christian values and assisted Pastor Adrian Michaels in carrying out the ministry of the church. Rhychard knew most of those men, had hung out with them, had dinner with them. He had even worked alongside them in several ministry projects. Of course, that was before Renny accused him of cheating on her and dumped him. Now, no one at Harvest Fellowship would even say hello to him.

Miles Evans had been an exception. The man loved gossip and didn’t care where he got it. Rhychard had known that about the man since he met him. Miles enjoyed his off-colored jokes that were borderline crude, which had surprised Rhychard considering Miles was a leader in the church. Of course, it was now quite obvious that something was rotten at Harvest Fellowship, and that standards were preached, but not followed.

Men started slipping out of the glass door on the side of Harvest Fellowship, making their way to the cars in the litter-free parking lot. The other deacons and pastors seemed lighthearted and untroubled, so whatever had David weighted down, it didn’t happen in the meeting.

David drove the same as he walked, sluggish. He seemed in no hurry to go home and wasn’t even hitting the speed limit. Rhychard swung his bike behind the Jeep and fought his impatience to pass. He needed to talk to David. He had always liked the Sunday school teacher. Though unmarried, he and Renny had sat in on the man’s class, drawing a lot of wisdom for their relationship from the man. David taught couples to be stronger, to overcome the struggles and temptations of life. Yet, somehow, he had been alone with Buttercup. She said he spent the car ride trying to convince her to leave life on the streets. He had even offered to help her. Yet, according to his teaching, he shouldn’t have even been alone with her in the car. The first time he slipped in his beliefs had trapped him and made him Adrian’s pawn.

David turned south on Washington Street and headed downtown. Not going home, David? Rhychard followed a few car lengths behind, curiosity making him cautious. He could just
